Contents
Types of inks found in ink pads
- Stamping ink is used to stamp images or words onto paper in black, white or different colors, but can also be used for techniques.
- Embossing ink is a slow drying and (most often) clear ink that can be used for heat embossing, resist techniques on glossy paper, combined with decorative powders …
- Lift ink can be used to transfer an image from a piece of synthetic paper with alcohol ink onto regular cardstock, leaving a ghost image on the synthetic paper.
Sizes of ink pads
Most ink pads are created in two sizes: a full size and a small or mini size.
Full size ink pads are usually around the size of a business card or bank card. The exact sizes and shapes vary depending on the brand or manufacturer. Some of these are stackable, some have a lid that is connected to the ink pad itself, some are oval in shape instead of rectangular …
Small or mini ink pads are mostly found in square shapes of about 1 inch or 2,5 cm wide. These are also called ink cubes. Although some brands have the small version of their ink pads in the shape of a rectangle, drop, eye …
Types of ink pads
The material that holds the ink can either be
- felt (which is firm and commonly used for dye inks)
- dense foam (which is commonly used for dye inks)
- light foam (which is commonly used for pigment inks)
Reinking an ink pad
For most inks, refill bottles or reinkers are available. These small bottles will contain the concentrated ink that is already in the ink pad when you buy it. This will allow you to reink the ink pad when it's running out of ink.
When you feel like an ink pad is getting dry, simply squeeze the bottle onto the ink pad and let it sit for a minute. Try to spread the ink around so the pad is completely covered. Don't add too much ink at a time. You can always add more if you feel that the ink pad isn't juicy enough after reinking it for the first time.
If a water-based dye ink has dried out (so not because you used up all the ink) you can try to refresh the ink with Ranger's Ink Refresher.
Empty ink pads
You can buy empty, uninked ink pads that you can use to either
- create a new color by mixing reinkers
- create an ombre or gradient ink pad by adding different colors in stripes
- use up your reinker in case you lost, broke, sold … the initial ink pad
