Black ink is probably the most used ink of all, since it can be used for techniques, stamping of crisp sentiments, and to stamp images that can then be colored in with different mediums.

Keep in mind you can darken most images by repeat stamping with a stamping tool.

Black ink for stamping sentiments

The inks below are relatively fast drying and will give you a dark, crisp result when stamping sentiments. Some of these dry slow enough so you can use them with embossing powders. Those inks are indicated with an (E).

  • VersaFine Onyx Black (pigment ink) (E)
  • VersaFine Clair Nocturne (pigment ink)
  • My Favorite Things Extreme Black (pigment-based hybrid ink)
  • Altenew Obsidian (oil-based pigment ink) (E)
  • Gina K. Designs Obsidian black (amalgam)

Black inks for coloring images

There are two main mediums where it matters what ink you use: water-based markers or watercolors, and alcohol markers. Below are a number of black inks that are found to work well for stamping images. Behind each ink is indicated if this ink is suited for use with water-based mediums (W) and/or alcohol markers (A).
